One of my favourite local places to retreat to is the Old Neptune. This small but beautiful pub rests on the pebbles of Whitstable beach and is the perfect place to view breathtaking sunsets and storms rolling in across the sea.

The place has character and charm by the bucket-load, having been washed away twice in its long history. The last time, in 1897, it was rebuilt using reclaimed timber which has twisted and warped over the years giving the place a lovely sloping, creaky feel. Today, the pub boasts a great line up of live music and is also dog-friendly. It has an excellent food menu full of locally-caught fish and the walls are teaming with paintings and sculptures by local artists.

I personally think the best time to visit is during the winter when it’s cold and crisp. The atmosphere inside is magical and the views from every window stretch out over the sea. I love to order the whitebait and a bottle of Whitstable Bay Ale whilst watching dark grey clouds roll in and the raindrops dripping through the old tiled roof and collecting in pint glasses dotted around the floorboards and tables. It’s also lovely to visit in the summer when you can take your pint, sit on the beach and feel the sea tickle your toes. I honestly can’t imagine a better pub in a better location!
